Interoperability Pledges and Translations
The Interoperability Pledge was made by CEOs of 9 major device manufacturers. This pledge is a great statement of patient and healthcare worker support by these companies. You can read more about their pledge at AAMI's website
Cercacor,
Cerner, Dräger, GE Healthcare Systems, Masimo, Smiths Medical, Sonosite,
Surgicount, and Zoll all pledged at the Inaugural Patient Safety Science & Technology

Interoperability is the ability of devices to share data. The information of these devices are shared and utilized among hospital worker and patients alike. In other words, if several devices are used in a hospital operating room, the user would be able to access all the information with one step. It should also include the language of the native speaker for better clarity. The sharing of data should impact and reduce patient risk through better education and information sharing.

Translation In Country Reviews
I developed this white paper to help clients understand the Review process and better enable their reviewer (often someone who works for the client) to efficiently review a translated project.
Guidelines for an In-Country Review
In-Country review is an important step in your
translation process. Ideally, the review should be sent to an individual in the
target country who has knowledge of your products and company. The person
selected is generally a sales manager, regional manager or distributor.
The associate chosen should have a linguistic
background, good knowledge of the company and product information in the target
language. The expectations and goals should be established in the beginning,
giving the reviewer a clear vision of what is needed.
þ Use an
editable file such as MS Word. The reviewer can make suggestions and comments
using the change tracking feature. If they are working in another file format
such as Excel or PowerPoint they can differentiate their comments using another
font and color.
þ Select in-country reviewers as far in advance of a
project as possible.
þ Give the Reviewer glossaries and style guides before
review starts.
þ Establish
delivery date of translated materials with the reviewer.
þ Establish
solid deadlines for reviewer’s comments.
þ Establish
the method of capturing the reviewer’s comments.
þ Provide
specific guidelines for your reviewers to follow
þ Supply
Language Service Provider with reviewer comments before final DTP if appropriate.
þ Stylistic
Preferences – the translators are professional linguists and have chosen the
most appropriate phrase and terminology for translation. Your reviewer needs to
understand his/her role is to review the translation not instill their stylistic
preferences in the material.
þ Do not
be alarmed if an in-country reviewer makes emotional unsubstantiated blanket
comments like “this translation is not usable”. Often upon translator review
you will learn the reviewer has changed or edited copy that is unnecessary and
often changes the original language meaning. Our translations are translated
and proofed by separate in-country professional linguists and are written to
mirror the intent and information of the original text.
þ When we
receive the reviewer’s comments, our translators will return their suggestions
and comments in a very timely manner. If we disagree with a change, we will
notify you immediately to discuss proper terminology and grammar.
Implementing Reviewer Comments
Your localization vendor
will implement the changes where valid. For some changes, particularly in the
case of stylistic preferences of the reviewer, it is helpful for your vendor to
have your reviewers available to answer any questions that may arise during
comment implementation. It is critical that your reviewer understands any
responses to the translation vendor must be done in a timely manner. Giving
your reviewer a deadline for reply is helpful.
Summary
Your educated choice to use
All Clear Translations for your language project was well thought out and a
good one. Our process already has a review step in it that is done by a
professional native-speaking
in-country language
professional. By setting up guidelines and parameters for your in-country
reviewer your process should be easy, less costly and time consuming for you
and your reviewer.
Checklist to be given to your Reviewer:
o
Must be in an electronic format
o
MS Word track changes, different font and
color…
o
You are looking for errors and
miscommunications
o
Comments should not include individual
style preferences.
o
Your review need to be timely and factual
to avoid costly time delays
o
You should read the original copy first, then the translated version
o
Your role is not to improve the content or
writing but to ensure the copy is understandable

Six Fundamentals Leaders Need for Global Success
January 3 2013 by Owen Sullivan
For individuals who are required to lead across cultures it often requires making decisions in complex or ambiguous environments, understanding cultural nuances and adapting one’s style accordingly. A good track record in one country does not guarantee success in the global arena, nor will merely exposing high-performing leaders to new cultures make them effective multinational leaders.
Right Management and Tucker International partnered on a study of 1,867 leaders of 13 nationalities to help multinational clients address the challenges of developing leaders with global responsibilities.
Six Fundamentals Required of Global Leadership Success
Our research identified six competencies essential for global leadership success:
Adapting Socially – To socialize comfortably with new people in unfamiliar social situations and to demonstrate genuine interest in other people.
Demonstrating Creativity – To enjoy new challenges, strive for innovative solutions to social and situational issues and to learn from a variety of sources. Creative approaches are more difficult, but more successful, in ambiguous situations.
Even Disposition – To remain calm, not being critical of oneself and learn from mistakes.
Respecting Beliefs – Demonstrate respect for the political and spiritual beliefs of people in other cultures.
Instilling Trust – To build and maintain trusting relationships, which is complicated because trust does not mean the same thing to members of different cultures.
Navigating Ambiguity – To see through vagueness and uncertainty, not become frustrated, and figure out how things are done in other cultures.
What this research found is that successful global leaders enjoy new challenges, strive for innovative solutions to social and situational issues and learn from a variety of sources. They are able to build and maintain trusting relationships and socialize comfortably with new people in unfamiliar social situations. Such leaders are able to see through vagueness and uncertainty, not become frustrated, and figure out how things are done in other cultures while also remaining calm, not critical of oneself, and learning from mistakes. They can also demonstrate respect for the political and spiritual beliefs of people of other cultures.
Multinational Organizations Can Apply This Research
Consider the following applications of this research for selecting, developing and retaining leaders who are required to succeed in a global business environment:
Selecting Overseas Managers
Use the six competencies to ensure the right managers are selected to assume and succeed in international or global roles. Assess their abilities against the competencies and identify competency gaps and risks associated with job performance. Create personalized development plans to foster growth and build strength. Evaluate competency strength against desired outcomes.
Growing International Leadership Bench Strength
Systematically grow leadership talent pipelines around the world to ensure a strong pool of qualified leaders ready for deployment into global roles. Continually identify, develop, nurture and retain leaders as part of an ongoing talent development strategy. Provide coaching to accelerate development in targeted and individualized ways, building upon the learning’s garnered from assessing the six competencies required for global leadership success. Place high-potential leaders in stretch assignments and in short-term cross-border placements to build proficiency in intercultural competencies.
Ensuring Success of Leaders in New International Roles
Once the decision to expand a leaders role to a global one has been made, be sure to put steps in place to aid their success in the short- and long-term. The cost associated with deploying the wrong leader is very high and as many as 42% of leaders fail when transferred internationally. Together develop an action plan for the first 90 days in the new role to ensure alignment with priorities and goals. Assign a coach for personalized and specific development. Meet for regular reviews of goal achievement against plan and adapt for change as necessary.
Localizing Country Management Teams
Many global companies are now focusing on developing their own local talent as part of building their overall leadership bench strength. These local leaders may take on overseas assignments themselves one day. Relying on expatriates and foreign assignees is costly, and unsustainable for many organizations in the long-term. Build accelerated leadership development programs that are customized for the top two to three levels of management to ensure a robust pipeline. Conduct competency assessments and identify skills gaps. Create customized leader plans specific to development needs. Support with coaching to accelerate targeted development.
Developing leaders for the Human Age is the most strategic effort organizations can make to create competitive advantage. Organizations can no longer rely on outdated work models, talent sources, people practices and leadership techniques to achieve success. The key to productivity is building a talent strategy that takes advantage of the innovations, information and technology available in the Human Age. Organizations must recognize that people have become their most valuable assets and they must optimize these assets to deliver on the needed results.

Machine Translations - at your own risk!
Hi friends,
I see websites being translated by machine translation engines all too often. These translations are sloppy, inaccurate and only hurt your brand image. Below is something that was obviously done by machine. This person wishes to build his service in America but has not taken the time to be accurate when talking about MSDS sheets. Something that must be accurate and clear. Read below and if you still use MT - do so at your own risk!
